While the other folks have been given their surnames on the memorial plaque not so for my mother. All hers says is “SYLVIA 1922-2008″. There was no need for a surname..she was known throughout the coast by her first name…she went through life like a hurricane…(it is fitting that one should be named after her at some point) in the meantime, just like that awesome force of nature..all my mother needs to be remembered is her first name….it says it all. The winds of have died down now Mom, you can Rest in Peace, sure in the knowledge that you were one of a kind. Awesome, uncontrollable, and always to be remembered!

The great sports long weekend continues with a round of golf ….it was a windy, windy day…As you look at the photo….Ian on my left, Rob on my right…I have known these two old codgers for over 55 years…NOW that’s a comforting thought….they were raised in Kenya as well…so we all know where we came from….that’s what’s so comforting and…comfortable.

We find ourselves in Connecticut and it happens to be my cousins 67th Birthday. A small group of friends are gather around what I have always thought of as a brilliant kitchen design. It consists of a very large central block table on which you can serve food, read newspapers, serve drinks, put the mail on and even eat a meal basically all at the same time. As I have found that most people spend 80% of their time in the kitchens, even when folks come around to visit, I have always considered this idea of my cousin to be brilliant…..and convenient.

These are the “Flat Irons” so called because the old cowboys of the West, thought they looked like flat irons used to press shirts etc Except these are tipped vertically. They are visible from my study window. Yesterday was a clear blue sky and today the clouds have scurried in and the foothills look romantic and remote. You can’t even see the snow capped mountains anymore…see what I mean about mixed up weather patterns. It was a year ago today that I woke up in Paris to the news that my mother had died. I had thought that she might “visit” me in some form but it was not to be…she has moved on to another plane and left this mortal coil far behind her…well done Mom! You are never far from our thoughts though, you were such a character, and the events of your life have become legends in the family history so they will be passed from generation to generation….I think you would like that and it is how you would want to be remembered.

His mother took him to the classroom last week and he didn’t want to leave he was having so much fun. He has his bag with his “stuff” his hair is combed, teeth brushed, he is READY!

Mum’s memorial, tucked safely away in the crook of her favorite tree. She is forever covered by a canopy of Frangipani leaves and blossoms….we KNOW she is happy with her final resting place.

My sister and I fixed the plaque to a massive, aged Frangipani tree that has withstood the test of time. Mother loved this tree and this part of her rambling garden. We felt she would be very happy here.

My mother died last year and chose to be cremated and asked that her ashes be buried in her garden. My sister and I followed her instructions but there was no plaque to memorialize her. This was the first chance we have had to remedy that, so we had a plaque made with a simple yet meaningful sentiment, “She loved this place.”….indeed she did.

James and Caryn, world travelers now, having spent the last year enjoying Europe in all its various glories are not wending their way back to Australia..via South America. They adopted Nadine a few years ago as “Granma” and their visit to Boulder involved lengthy discussions with “G” on the meaning of life and the difference between JB and Johnny Walker. One inspired the other I suspect…
