In London I stay at my Club. It was founded by the Duke of Wellington about three years after the Battle of Waterloo, so that would make it about 1818, or thereabouts. These are not the original premises, but they are magnificent none the less. Its pretty much a home away from home for me now. I know the backstairs and the ins and outs of the elevators. Its like the tubes, it doesn’t change and that’s what makes it comforting, and comfortable. Exactly what a Club is supposed to be. I lounged around on Saturday morning and watched Australia beat New Zealand at rugby…great game. As this visit was a flying one, I did not expect to be here for any length of time, so for those friends who read this as wonder why I didn’t call….It was all business and it was very quick…catch you next time guys…

These tube tunnels are old, old, old. During the second world war they were used by the London population as bomb shelters and you can see why. They are hundreds of feet underground, curved and long. If these walls could talk, what a tale they could tell!

Ahh the tube. Apparently, yesterday was chaos in the tubes because of the bomb discovery and the fact that the Police closed down most of the central London for almost the entire day. But, the tubes are still the best way to get around. Fast, direct and if your close your mind to the potential for disaster, safe as well. When I was training in London back in the 60’s the tube was the way to work, the way home, in fact the way anywhere. They haven’t changed much. Same color, same seats, same standing room….comforting in a way that the only thing that seems to have changed is me.

I don’t know if you remember, but June 28th was the day they found two cars full of explosives in London. One was in the Haymarket and if anyone of you reading this blog knows your London you can look at this picture with Eros over my right shoulder and you know that I am standing about 50 feet away from the Haymarket and probably about 50 yards from where the car with the explosives was parked. Of course it also was parked there about 8 hours after this picture was taken, but all the same. Makes you think…

I have an eye for the curious, that much you know about me. I could not resist taking a picture of this door. Think they got their message across? I think the little blue sign at the bottom saying “Private” is hysterical.

I am on a flying (as in quick) trip to London. I am flying Virgin Atlantic. It is the first time I have flown with these guys. They have a very interesting business section. It reminded me a lot of those hotels in Japan where the rooms are like cubicles that you climb into and can hardly turn around in(I used to stay in those hotels when I was starting the business and a cup of tea in Tokyo cost $25 and regular hotel room somewhere in the range of $750 a night!) Actually, the seats and the design is very clever. You can lay back in the seat with your feet up, (that is a picture of my boots) then when you want to go to sleep the crew converts the seat into a FLAT BED! All of us who fly International routes know how great a flat bed is. The other interesting idea Virgin had was to offer a meal in the lounge BEFORE you left, so that you could just sleep on the plane. That’s exactly what I did. I ate in the lounge and as soon as we took off converted into a bed and slept all the way over. Great design, great ideas, great airline. I’ll fly them again any day.

Flat as in FLAT BED...very cool.ZZZZzzzz |

Like some nightmare from a Stephen King novel, I spied these ants crawling across the rafters in Atlanta airport. Art is supposed to make you think and it did me. Why Ants? why on the roof? In Kenya where I grew up we called these Ants “Siafu” and they were very “karly” (Fierce). Their bite would leave red welts and you stayed out of their path. I wonder if these Ants move when the airport is shut down? Now there’s a Stephen King plot for you.

Just in case you think that I got my location wrong... |

I was supposed to be in Europe today but some unexpected business stuff came up and I found myself at home during Sandy’s birthday. She turned XX this year and we made the most of the day. Taylor did a fabulous job creating the banner, wrapping the gifts, buying the gifts (You forgot to give me my credit card back T) and setting things up. I bought the yellow roses, and requested Sandy’s favorite breakfast…Eggs Benedict! I cant show the rest of the shots beause Sandy came down in her pajamas. But she was surprised and thrilled that much I can share.

I went home to change, but some employees chose to do so in the office and have the limousine pick them up from there. It was a windy day, but this is still a great shot. From left to right, Heather (Operations) Sharon (Accounting) Mike (Executive) Colleen (Marketing) Dee (Operations) Pauline (Operations) . Note the nice touch that Dee has, discreetly holding a bottle of BAZZA tea!! Normally we have a casual dress code…not today..

Well the Party is over. We have hooted and hollered. We have not won but we don’t feel badly. Our three tables of friends, associates and workmates joined together for a last photo. It was a great evening, we all got a chance to dress up, I had a great speech prepared, guess I will keep it in the archives and use it somewhere along the great road of life.
