John Wayne

April 30th, 2008

Well maybe he would not have chuckled…perhaps a grim smile?

The John Wayne Airport

April 30th, 2008

I flew into Orange County Santa Ana airport, otherwise known as “The John Wayne Airport”. And there was THE MAN!  A huge Stars and Stripes as a backdrop to the guy who at one point epitomized American manhood.  I love the way they captured his walk….Do you remember that scene from the movie “The Birdcage” when the  camp star captures JW’s walk……I wonder if JW chuckled in his grave or rolled over.  If I had to bet I’d say he chuckled!

Where Does it Go?

April 29th, 2008

On the right it ends….it just stops!  I mean what happens to all the water?  There is some sort of grid at the end, maybe it goes underground in a series of pipes?

L.A. from the sky

April 29th, 2008

I leave the wet and cold greenery of Washington and Oregon and fly down to the warmth and chaos of Los Angeles.  I got a kick as we flew into the city seeing the huge viaduct that I have seen in so many movie chase scenes.  We were at around 10,000 feet and you can see how large it is.  Look at the bridge and the way they water is guided through the passages.  It may not rain a lot in Southern California but when it does it clearly rains a lot! It is a land of excess!

Oregon Highways

April 28th, 2008

The magnificent tree lined highways of Oregon. These militia types are totally spoiled….

God, Gold, and Guns

April 28th, 2008

This is what I mean by whacked out militias……”God, Gold and Guns”??????

Scary sentiments, I bet these guys NEED dentists signs that show teeth, on the other hand perhaps they don’t have any?  but a credo that espouses this belief system I just don’t buy into. Show me the compassion, the caring, the unity of man and I’m in!  G, G and Guns and I am out!

DIA

April 27th, 2008

Well paradise is just a faint memory now.  Just one day back in Boulder, just enough time to pick up a fresh set of clothes and I am back on the road again.  The old familiar roof if DIA beckons.  I am heading out to The West Coast, Washington and Oregon are my first stops.  Oregon is home to a lot of whacked out militias…the TSA security is correspondingly very tight….Oh Joy!

Dentist’s Sign

April 27th, 2008

I love this sign from the middle ages.  Back in the 14 Century most people did not know how to read so a “dentist” would advertise his skills by hanging out a large rooted tooth for all to see.  In St. Croix the habit still persists…personally I found the sign a little disturbing…I don’t like to think of teeth being removed when I go to a dentist!

Colorful Characters

April 26th, 2008

I used to like to buy these wind activated, ornamental and colorful characters but here’s the rub.  They rust!

So you soon find yourself surrounded by small particles of red stuff that stains, and grates and destroys all the joy of having NEMO fluttering around your home.  It is one of the penalties of living by the ocean.

The Removed Cactus

April 26th, 2008

Well the magnificent old cactus plant is a thing of the past now. I cleared it out.  I am thinking of planting a 8 or 9 foot palm tree in its place…it will look good and it will stop drunk drivers!
