A Graduation For Father and Son.

May 19th, 2008

The big day dawns! Rory is going to graduate. The day is overcast, rainy and windy not to mention cold! We don’t care…it is a highpoint day. A day all of us will remember. It struck me as being vey medieval. The Professors all wearing outfits that came directly from the middle ages. Hearing Rory’s name called and then see him walk across the stage to accept his degree was a major moment for me. Part of my fatherly duties had been successful complete. I had educated my son. I have given him the told to survive in today’s world. My duty is done!

What Will He Do Now?

May 17th, 2008

And here is the graduate himself. Trying on the mortar board before the big day. He is going to be granted a Bachelor of Arts with a major in sociology. What is he going to do with this hard earned degree that has taken 4 years to earn? He tells me that he wants to be a barman for a couple of years and see the world. Actually I think this is an excellent idea…he has been taught how to think, how to rationalize, how to research, how to argue (well maybe he already knew how to do that)in the rarified atmosphere of Hobart College and a year seeing the world from a working man’s standpoint will be an education of a different kind. I am all for it.

Oh Happy Day!

On The Road Again

May 16th, 2008

On the road again…this time heading East! I often think of O’Hare airport as one of those places that if you stayed put in one place, everyone you have ever met in your life would, at some point, walk by. It is a modern crossroads of the world. A lot like Constantinople used to be in the middle ages. Obviously I am in Chicago..but not for long. I am heading further East to one of those seminal moments in a person’s life..the graduation of my youngest son from College!

Let Freedom Ring

May 15th, 2008

Scotty with her car. It is the first true step of independence. From now on, apart from carrying little brother everywhere, an element of freedom will creep into your life. You are no longer tied to the home by a lack of wheels….the highway is calling…..look out world!

First Car

May 15th, 2008

One of the world’s greatest moments is your FIRST car. This car belongs to Scotty, who has learnt to drive on a automatic and her Dad has just bought her a stick shift Volkswagen. I love the color..it’s not quite British Racing Green but it is green and we will be able to see Scotty coming from a mile away. That is after she has learnt to drive a stick shift. Her first efforts have left deep black rubber burns on the driveway. Don’t worry Scotty, once you get the hang of it, it will be a breeze! You drive with your ears……sounds strange but your Dad will explain.

Apparent Patterns

May 14th, 2008

More patterns of Colorado, only now they are becoming much more apparent.

Mothers and Mac N Cheese

May 11th, 2008

Mothers Day!! Need we say more? In this case it is Grandma’s day with Granddad helping to reduce the temperature on the Mac n’ Cheese for his grandson. Did you call your mother? I did! I am glad I still have one.

It gives my lifelong prospects…..prospects having a mother that old.

No Messing Around

May 10th, 2008

Denver is really, really serious about garbage in their city. With the Democratic convention coming up they need to be. ( I mean they want it to be nice and clean!!) These outsize utensils can do the job………….

Domino Effect

May 9th, 2008

This looks like a row of dominos. Many a foreign policy was built on the assumption that if one goes they all go. This lot looks pretty stable.
