Betty

March 31st, 2010

Hershey was cold, wet and I stayed indoors and tried to adjust to the 12 hour time difference my body was going through now that I was back in the US.  On Tuesday we had the trade show and it was a smashing success.  Our tea is loved by the store managers and one kind manager asked to have her photo taken with me.  I guess Betty did not realize that she was going to end up on my blog …thanks for being a fan Betty…keep on lovin’ that tea of mine……..

For Your Safety

March 29th, 2010

Washington DC and I am in one of those ridiculous truck/trailer/buses that transport you around the airport in Washington. MY eye catches the sign and I cannot help but connect the dots …unintended though I sure they are. To the top of the picture ‘ FOR YOUR SAFETY” Further down the picture a list of religious services that are held at the airport. Do you know of any other airport that actually HOLDS religious services in their environs? I mean why does the Washington DC airport hold religious services? Anyone care to enlighten me?? The Jewish service is held daily, the others just once a week…but I ask… WHY?

Travel

March 29th, 2010

Bangkok-LAX..overnight in a Sheraton then a 5.00 pickup to catch a 7am flight to Washington DC to pick up a puddle jumper to Harrisburg Penn. To catch a cab to Hershey Penn. For the Sheetz trade show that starts on Monday. Who says that life on the road is fun? Anyway, this little Pomeranian was a whole lot more awake than I was at 5 am on Sunday morning in Los Angles…..

Bangkok Airport

March 28th, 2010

On the road again…and all airports are beginning to look the same to me. The folks who design these buildings fell in love with tubular steel at some point and never let go. I guess it is easy to keep on expanding the buildings if you start off using a kind of Lego toy set. The Bangkok airport is a classic in this respect…

Jim Thompson

March 28th, 2010

Jim Thompson’s main room, built in the 1950 and a classic of wood and space. No A/C in those days, so the home was built next to a canal for coolness, and had towering ceilings to allow the air to waft through. It is now a museum…worth visiting if you have the time…

Jim Thompson

March 28th, 2010

I am about to head back to the States but have a few hours to kill so I head over to the Jim Thompson museum. Thompson was a CIA agent who restored the ancient Thai silk business into a vibrant industry and then disappeared on a mission in Malaya (The Cameron Highlands) never to be seen again. He may be living in Baltimore for all I know! Anyway a very interesting guy (look him up in Wikipedia) and an even more interesting home that he built.

Red Shirts

March 27th, 2010

I guess I must be lucky to always be in Bangkok when the “Red Shirts” are in the process of having a mini riot…actually that’s not fair, as they did not riot.  They had intended to have a more “intense” demonstration but then agreed with the Govt. to have a “peaceful” one.  So the thousands of folks that gathered on the streets were affable and friendly.  I was lucky again I guess.

Fresh Produce

March 26th, 2010

One of the true delights in Thailand is the food!! Like all great centers of cuisine the answer is so blindingly simply as to why food tastes great….FRESH PRODUCE. Take Italy, the provinces in France and any really famous center for good food and you will find a lack of HUGE refrigerators, an abundance of fresh veggies, fresh caught fish with bright eyes and meat that is red and glowing……Thailand is just awesome in its fresh sea food. The restaurants actually have the fish swimming around in large basins, king prawns prancing with waving antenna, veggies that in the morning had roots buried in the soil…it’s a gourmands paradise… you walk around the restaurant picking “those three prawns”, “that flopping fish”, “those stalks of celery” and I have not even mentioned the Tom Yang Gung…but that’s another story for another day.
