The Channel

April 2nd, 2009

Remember the dhows sitting in the channel in Dubai?  I commented that they were the only genuine elements I saw in the place…well here is the place where most of them end up once a  year.  It is the Old Port of Mombasa. Used for centuries by slavers, traders, ivory smugglers, and fishermen who followed the monsoons down the coast from Arabia to Africa and then back again.  If you look carefully you can actually see a dhow as it enters the port…it is one of the great natural harbors of Africa, although not used by large ships any more, its sense of history is so tangible you touch and feel the past.  About as different from Dubai as it is possible to get.

Eggs

April 1st, 2009

You can see many strange sights on the streets of Mombasa, but this one really caught my eye.  A bicyclist laden, front and back with what must be hundreds of eggs! Talk about being motivated to keep you balance, avoid collisions and potholes…

A Bollywood Celebration

November 25th, 2006

Susan decided she wanted a Bollywood party to celebrate her 60th. So once again I am getting dressed up in an outfit to party. This time however, no-one was threatened by the look, in fact it created giggles….the things I do for my sister!

Bryanstone Country Club

November 23rd, 2006

You know enough of me now to realize that a golf course is somewhere in my sights. My sister plays golf so we played at the Bryanstone Country Club….friends gave the balloons…..she gave me a hiding…she is a better golfer than me. Of course I claim that I have jet lag and that when we were actually playing it was 2 a.m. in the morning for my body time. I don’t think anyone bought the argument.

Part of the joys of playing in Africa is the foliage and the bird life. I came across this elegant fellow on the 15th fairway...

I am stopping in Johannesburg while en route to Kenya for an FOA meeting on tea whose timing is perfect for me to be at my kid sisters 60th Birthday….this is my kid sister, Susan. She doesn’t look 60 to me! This was taken just after I arrived.
