Chicago’s Favorite Son

December 2nd, 2008

Road Trip!  And no prizes for guessing where I am today.  Chicago’s favorite son is being given his recognition.  It was unfortunate that they cut the slots to allow the air to pass through the banner right under his nose.  It looks a little like a nose ring and not what a future President would wear.

Apart from that slight flaw, it was an impressive banner, and an impressive victory.

1971 Jag E Type

November 25th, 2008

When I was young, and poor I would look at fellows just a little older than me driving around in cars I knew I could never in million years afford. These cars were long, sexy, fast and good looking,(these were also many of the attributes that the women in the passengers seats had as well) So I now have an affinity for those cars that were beyond my reach when I was young and is why I own a 1960 Morgan.  Look at my latest accoutrement….a 1971 Jag E Type…the car of cars.  The fastest thing standing still ever made by man.  This was the car I drempt about and yearned for and it was delivered to my doorway by friends so that I could try it out.  I may just park it in a garage, polish it and sit in the seat ..or maybe load up the baby seat and take little Barry for a drive ….maybe even get Sandy in for a ride although getting in and out of a E Type takes a less than modest approach …but once in the cockpit (there is no other way to describe it) it is worth the less than ladylike yoga like stretches you need to undertake…..

Ceramic Balustrades

October 30th, 2008

Home again! I arrive at Denver International Airport.  As I took the escalator up to the main floor I saw this row of ceramic balustrades….they look fabulous but I don’t understand why they are where they are.  No-one seems to notice them and they are protected from the public by a glass wall. Are they works of art designed to make us feel good…?  I was jet lagged but still aware enough to enjoy them.

Flying

October 22nd, 2008

On the road again and passing through Washington airport again.  You can always tell it is Washington airport because of the the truly weird busses they have that run around on the runways!  In fact, I didn’t just pass through I had to spend the night there because my flight was delayed.  This is the  norm nowadays.  I am old enough to remember when flying was glamorous.  When flying out to Kenya in the 1950’s people used to get dressed UP!!!  It was an event!  It is still an EVENT but not the kind that I look forward to and certainly not one get dressed up for.  I never experienced travel by Greyhound bus in the 60’s or 70’s but I imagine flying nowadays is very much like travelling by bus was 50 years ago.  Cramped, hot, tiring and you cant stretch your legs or talk to the driver.

Gas Guzzlers

September 25th, 2008

As most of the world knows we have a gas crisis going on in America.  Folks are not used to paying $4.50 or more for a gallon of gasoline.  We are hooked on big cars with big engines and we are hooked on cheap gas.

Expensive gas causes much anxiety in a society that is used to BIG gas guzzling vehicles.  I found one persons solution to the problem fascinating.

He hooked up his HUMMER (one of the worlds great gas guzzlers) that gets about 8 or nine miles to the gallon to be towed behind his camper vehicle (another one of the worlds great gas guzzlers) that gets about 5 or 6 miles to the gallon…???

If we see this type of solution as being our future we are in DEEEEEEP trouble…..!!

Huge Lines

May 1st, 2008

When Denver gets hit with a huge storm the Customer Service Center gets hits with huge lines.  It is one of those times that I am really glad that I am home and not on the road….prick me with a fork…I’m done!

A Snowy Landing

May 1st, 2008

I am back on the road returning home!  Denver is in the midst of a snow storm and we land in ZERO visibility.  I mean you could not see 30 feet. Here is a picture of the runway after we had landed!  The pilot had to be on automatic as he came down.  It was a smooth landing and a cold welcome.  The temperature was 0F and quite a change from LA.  One more event to go to tonight and that is the semi finals of the Entrepreneur of the Year.  YEP… I made the semi’s again.  This time perhaps I will not find a 800lb Gorilla sitting at the end of my branch (Remember CROCS?)  I have to admit that at this point I am a bit of a whipped puppy.  St. Croix, Boulder, Oregon, Washington, LA, back to Boulder all in the space of 6 days is really pushing this body.  This weekend I will take easy….

John Wayne

April 30th, 2008

Well maybe he would not have chuckled…perhaps a grim smile?

The John Wayne Airport

April 30th, 2008

I flew into Orange County Santa Ana airport, otherwise known as “The John Wayne Airport”. And there was THE MAN!  A huge Stars and Stripes as a backdrop to the guy who at one point epitomized American manhood.  I love the way they captured his walk….Do you remember that scene from the movie “The Birdcage” when the  camp star captures JW’s walk……I wonder if JW chuckled in his grave or rolled over.  If I had to bet I’d say he chuckled!

Where Does it Go?

April 29th, 2008

On the right it ends….it just stops!  I mean what happens to all the water?  There is some sort of grid at the end, maybe it goes underground in a series of pipes?
