“The Hat” kept the sun off my head and out of my eyes. I wish it had done the same for the USA team. They lost to Munster. This does not bode well for the World Cup. The next game the USA play is going to be against England. If they cannot beat a Club side what is going to happen to them against the current world Champions, England? I dread to think! It was a good game to watch and the USA should have won. They missed three brilliant opportunities to score a try. Each one involved a dropped ball. You cannot win games against top flight opponents and pass up good scoring opportunities.

The friends are in supporter mode. The fellow wearing a cardboard carton is an Irish supporter. He snuck in among us!

These are the friends who were smart enough to watch the Old Boys game. Bracketed by Guinness signs, we are a fine group of Rugby supporters. Today, we support the USA national team play Munster from Ireland.

Collegiate Championships don’t just “happen”. It takes a lot of dedicated folks to put in their time and effort to make things run smoothly. They announce the games, rig the TV sets, take the photographs and the hundred and one things that need to be done to make an event a success. They are folks behind the scenes, nameless most of the time, but without whom nothing gets done. This is by no means the entire supporting cast, but it is a significant number..hats off you guys..job well done! To those in this picture and to those who dined out that night and didn’t make it to the party..congratualtions. It was a great event. These pictures took a while to reach me hence the time lag, but the acknowledgment is still worth making, even if a tad tardy.

Here is another Most Valuable player award and you see what I mean about infectious delight. It was an aura around these guys….This was the Cal Tech player chosen as being the best on the field that day and the next shot of me with the entire Cal Tech Team is a kick.

The Stanford women’s team were on a surge in the last 10 minutes and scored a couple of trys. It was a very exciting game, but Penn State managed to hold on and win the trophy. Last year Stanford won and the other finalist was Penn State, so it all seemed fair in the end. Here I am presenting the plate trophy to the Captain of the Stanford team…

Look at this team work. The jumper has been lifted a good three feet in the air. The two second row forwards have linked arms and are coming in to support the jumper and drive the ball up field in a rolling maul. Impressive stuff. This was the Iowa Sate versus University of California at Santa Cruz in the final of the Division 2 Women’s Championship. I cannot say enough about how good these games were. Each one was a nail biter in its own way.

Over 6000 people attended the games and these were the two banners that met them as they entered the gates. The weather was at its Californian best and the pitch was like a billiard table, green, level and very fast. I awarded the trophies at the end of the Championship games and it was hard shaking the hands of the losers. They had come so far only to lose the final game, but the fact is they are real winners to get to a championship. As time passes, it will be the camaraderie and the effort they put forth that will be remembered. Not the loss.
