The most dangerous conditions of all on the roads and on the slopes are WHITE-OUTS!!! You cannot see a thing, you have to drive slowly or ski very carefully to get down to safety. There is a huge storm heading our way from the West Coast. It dropped over 10 feet of snow in parts of the Sierra Nevada range. We decided to head back to Boulder to avoid getting trapped up in Vail. Its nice to be trapped in Vail during a snow storm, but I do have a job to do… and the job is in Boulder.

The Vail ski mountains (because there a lot more than one mountain) offer truly spectacular views of the lower ranges. A lot of the slopes are roped off however because of avalanche danger. In fact the weekend we were there a skier was killed in an avalanche, when he crossed the rope boundary in East Vail and skied down a Shute that had not been groomed. At the best of times skiing can be a hazardous sport, crossing the ropes and going into the back country is really tempting the fates.

When I first started skiing I really did not like heights. Getting on a ski lift and then being hoisted over 100 feet (or more) was not a pleasant experience for me. I would firmly grasp the side rail, not look down, whistle, and do all kinds of mental games to stop thinking about the huge space beneath me and the thin coiled wire that kept me from plummeting to the ground! Those days are long gone now! I am so comfortable on a ski lift that I take pictures, look down, and enjoy the ride. I just hope I never get stuck on one though. I still have not figured out how they would get me down when I am suspended over a 300 foot chasm.
